Cherry Scott and family got to hear a poem she wrote take the ambiguous form of a song for the first time.

It’s been ages since we played at The Ship and we’re doing a long set  tomorrow so we’ll perform some tracks from the new album as well as some oldies and some totally new stuff.

Today we heard from The Mannequins who we met at the Grays fiasco and they’ve asked us to join them in Wickford at the end of Feb.

On the way there I couldn’t get Arctic Monkeys’ “A certain romance” out of my head which turned out to be appropriate because it didn’t “take no Sherlock Holmes to see that there ain’t no romance around there.” This place couldn’t be further removed from The Troubadour in Soho where the walls are adorned with icons such as Dylan and Hendrix who appeared at the venue during sixties. Here at Burtons there were pictures of Barry George and the venue has probably been frequented by faces from the Essex underworld. I’d fear writing this blog if I thought any of the locals could read.

The all male  audience most of whom are Essex’s equivalent of hillbillies  didn’t appreciate my observations  or social commentary, especially one single celled amoeba who hurled abuse in a menacing manner after I introduced the band and expressed my disappointment about performing at a sausage party.

I decided I’d better save the comedy for a crowd with a sense of humour and we quickly ensued with our performance which was a shame because I had encountered the perfect situation for comedy gold. Bill Hicks would have been in his element. However I’m a singer not a comedian and unfortunately I haven’t “balls of such magnitude.”     

To be fair though, the rest of the crowd, who were a paradigm of the inhabitants of Grays or part of the crew who came to see The Mannequins were supportive. Staff at Burtons joined forces with Paul who is my hero now and put the neanderthal back in his cage so we didn’t hear another peep out of him. The Mannequins were tight and performed enthusiastically despite the fact that two nefarious geezers, one of which had his arse out in its entirety, wrestled on the dance floor throughout their set.

So all said and done if I ever return to Grays it’ll be too soon. You live and learn and it was an unforgettable evening. No matter how hard I try to block it out!

Brad dropped into The Beatroots HQ yesterday brandishing his trumpet so we had a little jam.

Join us at Burtons in Grays on Wed evening where we’ll be joining The Mannequins!

It was also good to See Mikey who used to play trumpet for Goldmaster before leaving to tour with Get Cape Wear Cape Fly. He organises Kool Kids Klub and was the soundman for the evening.

Last night at Sunrooms I was glad to see The Seasiders performing to celebrate Pauls birthday and Darren Jones who played the drums during Dave and Paul’s set and rocked The Railway Hotel on New Years Eve with Dave perform his solo stuff.

Tallowah frontman Joe called and Invited me to do a verse on a track called Wise Up on monday. They’ve also asked me to feature on their forthcoming album which they are currently recording at Goldmaster Studio.

Jack returned to The Beatroots Studio today with Andy (trumpet) and we’re about to jam Wise Up.
